Documentary Screening – Witness real stories exposing the systemic, cultural, and infrastructural gaps in maternal care.
Expert Panel Discussion – Hear from a midwife, a clinical/public health pharmacist, and an OB-GYN consultant; voices representing the full continuum of care.
Interprofessional Workshop – Work alongside peers from medicine, pharmacy, nursing, public health, dietetics, physiotherapy, psychology, dentistry, and more to design collaborative solutions for safer maternal health.
Why It Matters
In tropical low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), over 94% of global maternal deaths occur in these regions, the vast majority which are preventable, over the past three decades, global policy frameworks from the safe motherhood initiative (1987) to the sustainable development goals (2015) have aim to strengthen maternal and child health outcomes, yet significant systemic challenges persist, limiting progress across many regions due to:
Shortages of skilled health professionals, especially in rural areas.
Limited access to quality antenatal, delivery, and postnatal care.
Cultural and socioeconomic barriers that delay or discourage care-seeking.
Research shows that interprofessional collaboration improves care quality, reduces preventable deaths, and fosters respectful, patient-centred maternal care.
